Why I love technology.
It’s at times like this when I mentally take a step back and genuinely marvel at what we, collectively, have achieved. I sit in a hotel in Allentown, PA, in the USA and I’m listening to this morning’s Chris Moyles show on my PC.
Now I’ve done this many times before (different locations of course) but this morning I did take that mental step back and just thought…
I’m in a hotel, in a smallish town in America with my PC connected to the internet and I’m streaming a Radio show which was broadcast live only a few hours earlier. It’s clear, sounds good, at least at good as I can expect from my tinny little lapdog speakers - SIDEBAR: Why do ALL PC laptops sounds tinny but my MacBook Pro’s sounds beautiful?? — SIDEBAR to the SIDEBAR: If my Mac isn’t a PC (Personal Comuter).. what is it?? — anyway.. - there are no drop outs and I would be more that happy to listen this way. In fact, most mornings I do listen to the show via the live stream.. even at home!
I also have an VoIP softphone installed and I can call home getting excellent call quality for free! (At least I will when I find a store locally where I can buy a microphone! I mean what sort of multimedia laptop doesn’t have a microphone built in!! Most frustrating.)
On the way over on the plane I watched 2 movies on my PSP and listened to a couple of albums on my iPod, which has more storage in it’s tiny silver form than the first server cluster I installed! I called my girlfriend on my mobile phone while I was driving up here from the airport (all very safely, I stopped at a petrol, or ‘gas’, station) and was brought safely to my destination by using a GPS system in the car despite never having been here before.
Is all of this necessary? Absolutely not. Could I manage without it? Of course I could! BUT… all of these things do exactly what they are designed to do. They make my life a little bit more interesting, a little bit easier and, occasionally, a bit more exciting too!
Me = geek. I love technology!
